5 ways to motivate yourself

Introduction

Motivation is a tricky thing. Even if you’ve got motivation, it won’t help if you don’t have any work to complete or goals to achieve. There are many ways that we can motivate ourselves, get things done, and stay on track with our goals. Here are 5 ways to motivate yourself that I’ve found helpful when trying to get myself going:

Set goals

You don’t need to be a professional athlete or a world-class musician to set goals. You can simply ask yourself, “What do I want to accomplish?”

  • Set a goal that’s attainable—a step-by-step plan of action that you can follow easily and consistently. For example, if your goal is “to lose 10 pounds,” break it down into smaller chunks as follows:
  • Lose one pound per week for five weeks (you’ll start off with 16 total). Then move on to another step in the process until you reach your final goal weight.
  • Share this goal with someone else so they can help motivate and support you along the way!

Have a positive attitude

A positive attitude is the key to motivating yourself. It will be tough to push yourself and make positive changes in your life if you have a bad self-image. You need to believe that there are things that you can achieve, even if they seem impossible at first glance.

If you’re feeling down about something—whether it’s an exam or a new job—start by thinking about all the good things that have happened recently. It can be that your friends came over for dinner last night; or maybe some friends asked if they could borrow money from you so they could buy some clothes; or maybe someone gave up their seat on public transport so another person could sit down next to them (that last one might sound trivial, but trust me when I say it made my day). Despite everything that happened to them, no matter how bad it was, they never gave up hope.

Reward yourself

Reward yourself for reaching a goal. Don’t reward yourself with food, alcohol, or drugs. Instead of rewarding yourself with shopping or TV, choose an activity that you’ve always wanted to do but never made time for (like going rock climbing). To get the most out of this strategy, make sure you’re doing something you can enjoy now. Not in six months, when your goals are met and all the fun stuff is over!

If it’s okay with your partner (or spouse), try rewarding each other instead of yourself! For example: if one person reaches their goal today by starting their own business tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., then give them something special like flowers from Whole Foods Market. If another person makes more sales than last month, then take them out to dinner at their favorite restaurant, etc.

Stop comparing yourself to other people.

When you compare yourself to others, you’re setting yourself up for failure. The best way to motivate yourself is by setting your own goals and working towards them.

Don’t worry about what other people are doing—their goals might be different than yours. They may have had a lot more practice than you do in certain areas. Instead of worrying about what others are doing or not doing, focus on how much better off you can be if only those things were true for YOU!

Keep your work and play space separate.

Separating your work and play spaces is one of the best ways to motivate yourself. It can help you get back on track when you’re feeling overwhelmed. It can also be a fun way to spend time with loved ones.

Here are some tips for making sure that your work/play space is as productive as possible:

  • Make sure that each room has its own lighting system that is controlled by an automatic timer so no one person has control over when they turn on or off lights (this means no more arguing over whose turn it was).
